Evaluate
Evaluation of Project 4; Rak Tamachat Nursery:
This project has presented me with a number of
challenges which I found sapped my motivation to some extent. This is part of
the reason for it taking me so long to complete. (Complete getting the content
onto my website that is).
Some of these challenges concerned the dialogue
with the client. The client was regularly changing his mind and wanting to build
the nursery on such a large scale that I personally thought was inappropriate
and unnecessary. The fact that i'm employed by the client as garden manager at
this project meant that I couldn't refuse the task of designing the nursery and
considering that I had to do this it seemed a natural choice to integrate it as
a diploma project. Particularly considering time constraints and my schedule it
seemed unrealistic to attempt to do another project for PR4. That said it has
been a project that i've undertaken with a distinct lack of enthusiasm.
The design is basically a sector analysis not
focusing in on details. The implementation will be carried out over the next few
months and further detailed design focusing on internal features, irrigation
systems etc. will be done using incremental design process.

process review:
personal:
I was feeling frustrated at times whilst
conversing and corresponding with the client regarding the nursery design. I
felt that he wasn't really listening to me or taking my ideas on board.
His desire to do everything on a huge scale and
coming up with ideas that were unrealistic and impractical, I found to be time
wasting and draining.
Conversely it was a good experience for me to see
how working with clients can potentially be difficult and challenging and I can
see how it could be beneficial in the future to have gone through this
process.
I found myself procrastinating for long periods
as to whether or not to go in to detail on the design. I found the thought of
starting to go into detail regarding complete interior design, irrigation
systems etc. to be overwhelming and unrealistic in the allotted time-frame for
the PR4 deadline.
Professional:
Similar to what I said above; I believe it was a
valuable experience for me to go through the ups and downs that can occur when
working with clients specifications. Particularly when working with difficult
clients who tend to be very changeable and have difficulty clearly articulating
their goals.
It has really hammered home to me the importance
of doing a really thorough client brief, perhaps allowing the client time and
space to go away have a good hard think about what they really want.
Ideally this would be emphasisedbeforehand during the email or phone
correspondence phase before the client and designer meet for a consultation and
client brief. Otherwise time, money and resources can be wasted.
Project:
I can see how the nursery at Rak Tamachat will be
of great value to the farm as a whole and could, in the future become a great
asset to the local community and later to the region.
It will be of benefit to the farm by creating a
space in which we can effectively and efficiently raise and store plants and
trees, carry out large-scale propagation regardless of weather conditions,
provide extra teaching / educational space, providing shaded and peaceful
relaxation areas, providing adequate tool storage and seed saving facilities and
generating an income from direct sales of selected species.
It could be of benefit to the local community
after time by providing them with a local source for purchasing young trees.
It could become of value to the local region over
time by providing them with a source for purchasing“exotic” harder to find trees
such as timber species, nut trees, grafted fruit trees and non native high value
species.
