To create a plant nursery to raise
and nurture vegetables, herbs and trees. To fulfill the following
functions;
To raise trees (primarily
leguminous varieties and fruit trees), to be planted in the food forest system
that Steve wishes to develop.
To raise trees to be planted as
shade trees and windbreaks around the property
To raise high quality, -hard to
find, non indigenous-, tree varieties for sale as a potential income
stream.
To raise annual and perennial
herbs and vegetables to be planted in the production veg gardens and the
perennial gardens. With the intention of;
Providing resilience, stability and security for
the community with regards to food.
Possible scaling up to commercial production in
the future.
Generating income streams through the production
of a diverse range of crops and farm produce.
To create a functional and
aesthetically pleasing structure that will be of benefit to the farm and
community residents.
To create a shaded area that can
perform multiple functions eg.:
An area to relax, take rest and get some respite
from the intense heat and sun. Particularly important on this site where there's
so little natural shade at present and the temperatures are often in excess of
40C.
To have an area suitable for teaching classes /
practical work sessions on propagation techniques etc.
To accommodate the
majority of our nursery plant stock.
To provide a roofed structure
which fulfills and incorporates the following requirements:
Lockable tool storage; a tool shed with shelving
and labels and sufficient space to be able to securely store a large quantity of
valuable tools and machinery.
Propagation area; an area to conduct
transplanting, potting and various propagation activities, mix potting soils
and store bulkier items eg. Pots, seed trays, finished compost etc.
Seed saving area and office; an area to collect,
save and organise seeds and document nursery propagation progress.
