Implement Project 5
Ongoing work for Holistic Regeneraion:
Economics and Finances; A Sustainable business model
Obtain a Yield:
This project is focusing on how we
can obtain a yield from our chosen career path; Permaculture related work. After
all, we can't work on an empty stomach.
Born out of the desire to do meaningful work that
we enjoy and that fits with our Ethics Matt and I have been striving towards a
career in Permaculture.
Recognising the fact that it's unrealistic for us
to be able to effectively help and support others if we're not meeting our own
financial needs, we came up with the idea of setting up our Permaculture
consultancy company “ Holistic Regeneration”.
The aims of the company are to help us branch out
into the field of consultancy, design and project implementation. To produce a
website to help us to promote our services and to act as a platform for us to
market and advertise our courses and workshops.
Since the conception of Holistic Regeneration
things have started moving very rapidly and, even though our website isn't yet
up and running, Word seems to be getting out.
The dynamic duo, aka “holistic Regeneration” are
stepping into the limelight and we believe that the universe is conspiring to
provide for our every whim; Gaia understands and empathises with our positive
intentions to heal, rejuvenate and regenerate her sacred domains and seems fully
intent on paving the way for us to do so.
Projects / Consultations in the
pipeline:
So far Matt and I are in talks with three different entities regarding permaculture
consultancy and design work, with two of them being definite jobs that we have
already committed to.
We have also recently received requests / opportunities from several different parties
regarding running courses and doing consultancy work in such far flung regions
as England, Pakistan and Malaysia.
Two of these opportunities have presented themselves during a recent permaculture Teacher
Training course that I attended in Thailand. They involve working with NGOs;
Concern Worldwide in Pakistan, we will be focusing on educating and
working with the local communities to help provide them with a better
understanding of local community resilience, and effective and sustainable use
of renewable resources.
The other NGO
is PANAP pesticide action network asia & the pacific; Potential working relationships with this group will
be focused around working with local farmers introducing the concepts and ideas
of water harvesting techniques, keyline design, drought proofing, soil
improvement, and sustainable land use. As well as working with womens groups
exploring ways in which they can improve their self-reliance and local
resilience. Definite possibilities also exist for running courses and workshops
in Malaysia.
The Two main projects which Holistic Regeneration are currently
involved are consultancy and design of an eco-retreat project in Kenya and
consultation for a perrenial pollyculture system in the north of
Thailand.
Kenya:
The work that we've been employed to do in Kenya is based around the
design of an eco-retreat centre on the coast of Kenya not far from Mombasa.
We will be leaving on the 3rd of
August for a one month all expenses paid trip to Kenya to look at the land, do a
detailed goals articulation brief with the client and produce a base map and
zone sector analysis for the project. This work will not be paid but will, we
hope, lead to a fruitful working relationship with the client, doing more paid
design and consultation work for her in the future.
The work came about through an associate of Matts who knew of a friend
who was looking for a couple of guys just like us to help design her land and
provide information, research and services.
Lampang (Northern
Thailand):
This will be our first paid consultation job and
is scheduled for the 19th of
December this year. We've been corresponding with the client for several months
now regarding the possibility of us doing consultancy work for
him.
His wish is to create a low maintenance productive garden for his aging
foster parents, with the intention of consuming and selling fruit and vegetables
on a daily basis in the future.
Background info from the client:
To give you some background: The land, totaling about 17 hectares or 40 acres, was
accumulated by my Thai host parents over a period of nearly 30 years. Recently,
we leveled the land near the road to build a house and create a vegetable
garden. However, as my host parents are in their early sixties, I am not sure
how long they will be able to tend to such a large garden. Hence, the idea of a
self-sustaining garden that will provide them with fruits and vegetables in the
future.
Most of the slopes are now being used to grow teak trees, as an investment for the
education of the family's grandchildren. I have been wondering if we can somehow
integrate the teak in the permaculture garden, keeping in mind that the teak
trees will be cut when 7 to 10 years old (of course not all at the same time).
Ideally, in future we would be consuming and selling fruits and vegetables from
the garden on a daily basis, while selling a bunch of teak wood every 2 to 4
years.
We will visit Johan for a one day consultation and will follow our
standard consultation process as outlined in the design section. After
completion of the consultation we will offer Johan a number of possible options
for next steps (as detailed in the design section).
Then we'll take it from there...
Other Jobs:
We are also corresponding with a lady who owns an eco–resort in
Indonesia and is interested in possibly employing our services. Time will tell
whether or not this bears fruit in the future.
